Love is in the air...

OK, her name's Jodie and she's a year older then Jake. He thinks she's the "bee's knees" and, apparently she talks about Jake almost as much as he does about her. Jodie went to Jake's current school last year too, so that makes Jake the new kid in her eyes. Anyway, all the mom's were invited to a Valentine's Day tea today at the school (Kiddie's Campus) and my boss obliged me and let me sneak out for almost 2 hours!! It was fun to see how the kids interact with one another and what they do during their day. It was also great to meet some moms and I'm sure Jake will have a few play dates with some of his friends in the not-too-distant future (YAY again for me working half days soon!). Anyway, Jodie's mom's really great and she said after the first day back at school, Jake was all Jodie spoke about. She even told her mom that she loves Jake. I was about to hit her (Jodie that is), but decided (against my better judgement) that I mustn't interfere in my son's love-life...

Anyway, here's Jodie and Jake taken about an hour ago...

Despite the height difference, cute hey?? Not sure who or what Jake's actually looking at.

Oh, I also got 2 biscuits that he'd decorated and a little jar he made and decorated and put chocolates into for valentine's day. He's made various hearts and picture frames over the last week, so our house will look quite festive tomorrow. Needless to say, Jake was reluctant to part with his biscuits and chocolates, so all I actually got today was the decorated tub. He's gone to Jacques mom this afternoon, so I'm sure she'll be enjoying MY Valentine's gift...

My little sunshine...

OK, this is my first attempt at uploading a video from my cell phone. Not the greatest and I can't rotate it, so you have to watch it side ways. Somehow his mouth's moving differently to the sound, even though I took the video on the best quality (which is supposed to be pretty decent on this cybershot thing I've got. And, for some weird reason, whatever system manages this whole blog thing, is cutting the last word off, even though he did sing it. Still, sure you'll get the idea and I promise to try get this right soon!

Valentine's Day traditions

I wanted to make my blog page pink, for Valentine’s Day, but somehow the pink just didn’t go with the photos of my boy, so I’ve made it blue. I wish I could get my blog to look as gorgeous as Wendy’s, but I’m just not that clever yet.

So, Valentine’s Day tomorrow. Most of us have our own traditions and ideas of how we’d like to spend the day with our nearest and dearest, traditionally, our significant other. For me, I don’t have one of them, so I like to think of Valentine’s Day as a day to celebrate the love of friends and family. Oh, I used to celebrate Valentine’s Day with Jacques when we were dating. We never spent lots money on expensive gifts, but we’d always do something nice, like go out for a meal or go see a movie. One Valentine’s day, I remember, we packed a picnic and went and sat up on the side of Signal Hill and watched the sun set and lights of Cape Town wake up. Of course that was back in the days when it was pretty safe to do things like that...

After we got married, Valentine’s Day fell during the thick of harvest time, so Jacques was always very tired and hard at work. My parents took to bringing a picnic up to the farm to share with me, just so I wouldn’t be sitting on my own. Jacques would invariably run in for 20 minutes to grab something to shove down his throat and then pass out. You must remember that during harvest time, there’s a period of about 6 weeks, where they’re lucky if they manage to get 2 or 3 hours sleep a night. And harvest lasts for about 3 months. I could hardly get a full sentence out of Jacques without him falling asleep mid-sentence. It was crazy – he used to fall asleep on the toilet, in the shower, anywhere he could!

Jacques and I were always of the opinion that we didn’t need to wait to celebrate our love on Valentine’s Day – we tried to make the best of each day (although we did still argue and drive one another nuts from time to time too). All that said, it’s still nice to have someone around to share Valentine’s Day with.

This year we'll do the same thing as last year - Jake & I will be going with my parents down to Camps Bay beach front for a picnic dinner. We’ll pack some wine (and definitely some chocolate!)and watch the sunset. Jake had a ball last year, so I'm sure we'll have a good time - I just hope the weather is as great as it is today!

So, some history on Valentine's day - I had to do a Google search to find out where Valentine’s Day originated and it seems that, although it’s named after St Valentine, a Roman, who was martyred for refusing to give up his faith, the history of the celebration is a bit murky and there are many different opinions and legends around the “holiday”.

In ancient Rome, February 14th was a holiday in honour of Juno, who was the queen of the Roman gods and goddesses. The Romans knew her as the Goddess of women and marriage. The following day, February 15th, the Feast of Lupercalia began. This pastoral festival was held to avert evil spirits and purify the city, releasing health and fertility.

14 February was also a day on which “love lotteries” were held whereby eligible bachelors had to pick names of teenage girls out of a jar. Which ever girl’s name the bachelor drew, was to be that man’s lover for the remainder of the year (thank goodness times have changed!). Sometimes it worked out and they were married, other times they just drew a different namet he following year. Some Pope didn’t like the pagan idea of these love lotteries and instead of “selling off” the teenage girls, he put saints’ names into the jar and both men and women were allowed to draw a name. They were then to follow the behaviour of the saint they’d drawn for the remainder of the year. This lottery was named after St Valentine.

St Valentine apparently died on 14 February 269 AD. Legend has it that St Valentine fell in love with the jailer’s daughter whilst serving a jail sentence leading up to his death and that he sent her a farewell note shortly before his death, signed it “From your Valentine”.

Legend also has it that St Valentine served as a priest during the reign of Emperor Claudius II, who involved Rome in many bloody and unpopular campaigns. Men did not want to leave their families or lovers to join his army, so Claudius cancelled all marriages and engagements in Rome. Valentine, defying Claudius, secretly married couples. When Claudius heard, Valentine was condemned to be beaten to death with clubs and to be beheaded (harsh!!). This took place on 14 February. In 496AD the pope set 14 February aside in honour of St Valentine.

So, all that aside, however you chose to spend your day tomorrow, I hope you have a wonderful day – it’s sure to be better then the one St Valentine endured all those years back! I love you lots and lots!!

From your Valentine, Sue xxx

Prayer from the heart...

Every night, when I put Jake down to sleep, after he's had his bedtime story, we say a little prayer. Just something short and sweet, thanking God for the day and asking for a restful night. I normally say it out loud and Jake sits quietly next to me, waiting to yell out 'Amen' when I'm finished. Last night, I'd just started our little prayer and he obviously decided that he had something to say and get off his chest, so he blurted out: 'Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for lips and useful things; thank you for a nice day; thank you for useful things and thank you for my mommy. Amen'. Too cute for words, although I battled not to laugh over all the "useful things" he's so grateful for. Hope everyone's well - will put up a new post as soon as I find the time to! XXX

The week gone by...

HELL-OOOOOOOO!! Jake got a prank kit for Christmas. It's got a whoopee cushion, which he loves, plus these real dork glasses and teeth. And yes, I still love him... This week has been a fairly quiet one. Not much to report. Jake had a good swimming lesson yesterday (no vomit), so I'm happy. And, most importantly, he's looking forward to his next lesson!!! I had a little chat with him on Tuesday after that lesson and tried to explain the differences between the type of diving his dad was doing when he drowned, vs the diving Jake does at his swimming lessons. I tried to let him know that what his dad was doing was dangerous, but that he's safe when he's swimming with his teacher or any other adult. I've drummed it into his head that he's a very loved little boy and that nobody wants anything bad to happen to him; that we're all looking after him. Anyway, he still wasn't keen to jump yesterday and his teacher avoided the suject completely. For now, I'm just keeping everything crossed that he's going to start enjoying it again from now..

We've also got friends here from the UK for a short visit, so met up with them at the Blue Peter for a pizza and glass of vino collapso on Tuesday evening. Jake was so tired, after listening to my little chat above, that he passed out in the car. Something he hardly ever does. Even as a baby, he wouldn't sleep in the car, I think there's too much to look at with the world passing by. Can you see his dad in that face?? Check out those lips... So, this weekend's set to be quite a quiet one for us. Although I've got to take Jake for a suit fitting, for Jo's wedding, this evening. It's ruddy difficult to find anywhere that's got a suit to hire for a kid his size too, so fingers crossed that this suit will do the trick. He tried one on during the week and it was miles too big on the shoulders, but he looked so handsome. I can't wait to have him walk me up the aisle!! On Wednesday I met Joanne & Paul at Harbour House in Kalk bay to chat to the people at the restaurant about the whole thing. They seem very organised and we've got a plan 'B' in place if the weather is bad and prevents them from having the ceremony on the pier. Either way, I'll have Jake by my side and I'll be the happiest girl there. That and my anti-depressants better be working properly by then. The surrounding waters claimed Jacques life, so it's still going to be a tough day. Definitely NOT drinking AT ALL...

So, just some general harbour photos (I love boats and water)...

This is the harbour wall, or pier, where the ceremony will take place. We've been really worried about the weather, but it seemed that Kalk Bay was the only place in Cape Town, where the wind wasn't blowing yesterday. Keeping fingers crossed that we're lucky. Although, full moon's 2 days before and high tide's 15 minutes before the ceremony's set to start, so we might have to move things in doors, in which case the wedding will take place in front of huge windows looking out to sea... Harbour wall: Just hoping that I don't get a heel (I am braving stilettos) stuck in one of the many crevices on the pier. Crap, I might just be an embarrassment after all...

Jake & "Nini" (aka my mom) looking out to sea...

Harbour House is where the reception will be, it's the upstairs part of the building...

This is part of the the view from one side of Harbour House - check the pier...

This is Jake wishing he could go to Greece again...

Look at me and smile, for Pete Sakes...

OK, I guess I asked for it. This is what I get when I ask for a smile... Sorry - I took quite a few photos with my new phone and have just copied them all accross my PC. They're far from the best quality, but just something to brighten up my post.

Hope you're all well and hope the weekend brings lots of sunshine and laughter to you all!

Lots of love, Sue xxx

PS. Jake caught me this morning (he took the photo). Just explains why he behaves the way he does...

I believe

I believe that feathers are symbolic of the presence of angels. I believe that when you find one in a strange place, its an indication that there's someone with you, watching you. I like to believe that Jacques' is still around me from time-to-time, that he checks up on us. I have just finished reading through everyone else's blogs, when the tiniest feather floated down in front of me. It's so small, it could be mistaken for a chunk of dust. I reached out to touch it, but it darted up out of my reach. It hovered above my desk, just out of reach for a couple of seconds, before it slowly descended between my body and my monitor and has just landed on the desk next to me... I like to think it's Jacques popping past to say hi. Actually, now that I think about it, when we went to the outlaws for dinner last night, there was a tiny white feather blowing around Jake's feet as we walked up to their front door. And, without sounding like a fruit cake, I have had lots of feathers around me in the past. And I'm not just talking about the standard birds feathers lying on the ground, I'm talking about he ones in unusal places. I once had one fly the car and land on Jake's chair when I was strapping him in as a tiny baby; I've had one land in the dogs water bowl when I've gone to feed her (Amber, our Rhodesian Ridgeback was Jacques' princess - she followed him everywhere, even to work); perhaps the strangest though was the one that landed between my feet whilst visiting the ladies room at Jacques' parents house... xxx

News worth sharing...

YAYAYAYAYAYAYAY - I finally plucked up the courage and asked my boss if he'd consider employing me on a half day basis. His reply was "why" at which point I felt tears starting to prickle my eyes, like a real girl. I was so cross with myself over that. I mean seriously, hey, why cry? Who knows? I'm just a twit. It also made me realise that these anti-depressants just don't seem to be their job very well yet. Anyway, once I'd pulled myself together, I explained that I'd been offered another job, but that it would mean working in town and, that although the salary was considerably higher then what I'm earning at the moment, I do enjoy my job and I do like the people I work with. I just get a bit bored from time to time and I'd really like to spend more time with Jake. Honestly, before I know it, he's going to be all grown up and I'm going to have missed half of it. At least this way, I'll work till 8 - 1 and have the whole afternoon to spoil him with. I'm so excited about it and I'm so relieved that I'm going to have more time on my hands. And that Jake & I can do things together when I get home at lunch time! Whooooo-hooooooooo! When I told my mom, she asked whether it meant that Jake & I would be moving out into our own home now. I'm not. I'm waiting for my sign that the time's right and now's just not it. I've said for a while now, that when my tenant hands in notice, that'll my signal that it's my time to move in.

We've got quite a busy weekend ahead - tonight we're definitely going out for supper to celebrate my "new" job; tomorrow morning Jake's got a party, from 11-1, then I've got a baby shower from 2 -4 and then a braai (BBQ) at the outlaws from 5 onwards. We've got a friend here from the UK. Thankfully, no plans for Sunday!

Oh, speaking of the outlaws, Jake vomited at swimming again yesterday. He's so happy in the pool, but he panics the minute he's got to dive in. And I could see him stressing, then trying to make himself sick. It was awful. Anyway, I tried to let him know that I was disappointed that he hadn't tried his best, and I let him know that I didn't approve of his vomiting. Especially since I saw this time that he hadn't swallowed water, but was using it as an excuse. He didn't get a sweet from his teacher at the end of the lesson, becuase he'd been sick and hadn't listened to her during the class (he wouldn't jump in). In the car on the way home, I was chatting about the day and it dawned on me that he knows that his dad drowned whilst diving. When I asked why he was so scared of diving in, he kept telling me he was going to drown. From what he was saying, he's been told something along the lines of "you won't drown like your daddy did". Grrrr... After lots of reassuring, he tells me that he'll do better next time. Fingers crossed...

On Joanne & Paul's wedding, it's just 3 weeks to go tomorrow. The lady doing the bridesmaids dresses hasn't started, although when I phoned to ask her how far she was on Tuesday evening, she said she'd call us for a fitting either today or tomorrow. I can't wait to get it done. My mom went to see Jo's dress on Wednesday and says it's absolutely gorgeous and that she looks like a fairy - I can't wait to see it either. Jo & I are going through to the venue (Harbour House - www.harbourhouse.co.za) on Wednesday to finalise plans with them. I've never eaten there, so we'll probably get some dinner while we're there - I'm looking forward to sharing that with her too. We've still got quite a lot to organise, but most of it's last minute stuff. I'm hoping to take Jake for a suit fitting either this evening after work or tomorrow morning. So much to think about. At least the kitchen tea's done!!

Hope everyone else has a great weekend. I think on Sunday, I'm going to have to spend some time in the pool with Jake to try get his confidence up again. He was doing so well.

Lots of love, Sue xxx
