Our school had a virus on their computer shortly before the end of term, which meant that we had to wait for our kids reports to come out this week! Jake brought his home yesterday and WOW!! What a boytjie!!
Grade 5 has been a big jump from grade 4, for us. Not so much in the volume of work, but more in the way Jake's growing as an independent learner. The teachers were quite stern with us at the beginning of the term, encouraging us to set up dedicated homework areas and times. No more doing homework around the dining room table. Going hand-in-hand with that is the fact that the kids need to start summarizing their own work and studying on their own, with obvious guidance from parents. As a mom who's fortunate enough to work half day, so that I can be around to help with homework, this has been particularly challenging for me! I'm trying though...
During term 1, the kids don't write formal exams, but they do have a week of tests on all work covered up to that time. I did help Jake with a bit of his summarizing, but he did a lot on his own. He also managed to do a lot of his studying alone and then I quizzed him on his work. He went over and over it until he felt comfortable enough with the content. I am VERY chuffed to say that Jake did unbelievably well this term. He has maintained his position in the grade and did beyond brilliantly (in my opinion). The kids are marked out of 7 and Jake scored 2 sixes and 5 sevens!!!
The highlight on Jake's report for me was his teacher's comment: "It is a pleasure to teach Jake, who has a wonderful general knowledge. He is a diligent learner and has produced work of a high standard. I am so proud of how hard he has worked on the presentation of his written work tasks." Whoop-whoop!! Need I say more???
Hope you have a wonderful weekend!
Love,

Well done Jake! We get % from grade 4 on and not the 6 and 7 system. I feel way happier to get that exact mark.
Congrats mommy that is such a wonderful result! All the hard work paid off
Hi Cat,
Yes, we also get percentages from grade 4. Just easier to put a 6 or a 7 down, rather than list percentages. Jake's varied from 78 for his languages to 90 for Geography :o)
Thanks Funso, very chuffed indeed!
