An adventure...

Around Christmas time, Jake and I were invited to join old family friends on a 4x4 holiday to Botswana and Zimbabwe.  I use the term friends very loosely, as these are friends I hadn't seen since I was a child.  Needless to say we jumped at the chance to explore our beautiful continent a little more and so tonight, we head off on one of our biggest adventures yet - BOTSWANA and ZIMBABWE!

We fly into Jhb this evening and spend a night in a hotel near to the airport.  Tomorrow morning, we'll be up early to pick up our rental and that's where the real fun begins!  So, I've already said we'll be 4x4ing, but I didn't mention that I'm actually going to be in the driver's seat.  I've never driven a 4x4 and I'm used to my teeny tiny Yaris.  We'll be driving through mud (it's still the rainy season that way) and sand and I must admit to feeling a little less brave today than I did in December..

Our car is also our home (we'll be sleeping on the roof, not in the side tent)...
Not the world's greatest camper, because I like some creature comforts like a bathroom, I just couldn't turn down the opportunity!  It's a trip we'll probably never get the chance to do again.

Most of Botswana's natural areas are unfenced.  It's not unheard of to see wild animals far away from the national parks.  The camping areas are also unfenced, which definitely makes us feel a bit uneasy.  We've already decided that if we're too nervous to sleep in the tent, we'll just sleep in the car. We should have some exciting adventures to share when we get home!

Our basic route is CT - Jhb - Kang - Maun - Third Bridge - Camp Savuti - Victoria Falls (via Chobe) and the Mana Pools - Jhb - CT

We can't wait to share our photos and stories - we'll try from along the way, but I don't think we'll have much reception!  We will be thinking of our family, who we wish we were taking with us, all the time.

Sending love until then,
Sue XXX
