The Mealie...

Jake picked his first mealie (corn) on Saturday morning too and I cooked it up for him for lunch yesterday. Not sure if it's a biased opinion or not, but it was the most perfect and delicious mealie I've ever eaten...

Wow! Your garden is doing really well. I've never been able to grow such a succulent ear of corn (mealie).
Congratulations!

Mealies aren't too difficult to grow, but they need a lot of sunshine and plenty of space (about 1m2 per plant). I battled with deciding when to pick them and our first one went to 'waste' (Jake's dried it out for seeds next year) because we left it on too long. The kernels don't ripen right to the top of the mealie and you just have to cut that bit off - that's what they do in the stores at least! It was very rewarding (it seems all gardening is!) and we have a few more ripening - can't wait!!
