Going Underground in Cape Town...

As many of you know, last weekend we braved a trip down below Cape Town's city streets as we did a tunnel tour of the old canals.  Not many people know that these canals exist, let alone that you are able to do tours.  But you can and we did and it was brilliant!  Well worth a go if you're older than 7 and young enough to manage a ladder down a man hole...

So, here's our group gathered in the car park of the Cape of Good Hope Castle.  It's where dear old Jan van Riebeek set up home when the Dutch first discovered the Cape, in 1852.  Back then, the sea/beach came right up to the castle on the Strand Street side, hence the name of the road (strand = beach).  Anyway, here we're getting our instructions on the tour...
And this is Matt, our guide.  Sorry for the poor ...
Jake and Danie waiting to get going.  Jake was really excited about the trip.  They did luminous face painting on Jake (and me) and gave us all little light sticks...
Hahaha - I love this little pout.  He was blowing me a kiss...
Weeds that look so revolting growing in my lawn (I have about a gazillion of these on my pavement, no exaggeration), but look so pretty growing out the castle walls...
Checking out the man hole and getting our instructions on how to proceed down the hole...
When it came to going down, Jake was a little nervous.  He did well though and once he was in and going down the ladder, he was happy again.  I think it was just the shift from being on the ground, to finding the first rung on the ladder in the dark and then having to manoeuvre down...
 There's me...
And yes, there were spiders, but no many and they stayed on the roof, well out of my way...
This picture shows the division where the new bricks meet the old ones.  The canal became a bit of a dumping ground and so it was closed up years ago (I can't remember how long ago)...
Um... this is a picture of one of the bigger colonies of cockroaches.  There were a lot of cockroaches and they seriously are my worst bug ever, but you do kind of switch off to them.  They stay on the wall, so it's really not that bad.  And they don't make any funny noises...
Like little moles winding through the tunnels...
Here two canals meet.  Some of these canals come from as far as Camp's Bay and Table Mountain.  There's a lot of water below our city!  Actually, Woolies head office in Adderley street has tapped into this water and uses it for it's bathrooms.  The water is perfectly clean and there hasn't been sewerage in the tunnels since 1800 and something...
Haha - this is Jake's face after he slipped and went for a little swim...
He was pretty wet, but got over it OK.  Thank goodness it was a lovely day.  They don't do tours if there's any remote threat of rain.  The water runs quite quickly and the tunnels can fill up in a flash...
Looking heavenwards through a man hole...
this is an older part of the tunnel, running up towards City Hall.  You can see the old bricks (the same as the castle's walls). The roof is also much lower, which meant we had to duck if we didn't want the spiders to touch our hats and potentially fall down our backs...
Mom and Dad were there too.  Always game for fun, those two...
And then it was back into the sunshine...
Jake's boots were full of water and he was drenched...
All in all, it was quite an adventure and such a wonderful experience.  We hope you all get to go some time!!

Sending lots of love,

OK, I have very few excuses as to why I have been so lazy with blogging.  Work has been pretty hectic and as month end looms, I know that it's just going to get crazy all over again.  And that's just me, I won't even mention how busy Danie is at the moment.  That said, we take our chances when we get them and we do find some precious moments to enjoy together.  Like after Bianca's christening, when we took Jake to play putt-putt.  It was a lovely day and it was fantastic to get out in the sunshine for a bit.  Jake played super well and was really chuffed with his hole-in-one.  I opted to watch and take photos of my guys.
We play putt-putt in Muizenberg, which is literally around the corner from Danie's house.  It's on the beachfront, which you can't see when you're playing putt-putt because there's a wall in the way.  I love this sign at the little take away spot.  It's like it's stuck in a time warp...
My little pro golfer.  I must remind Danie that Jake would love to go around the course with him sometime.  We are going to a family golf event this Friday, but only the grown ups get to play.  Jake would really love to have a few swings on the course and, of course, try out his putting skills...
See?  There's no ways that I'd get past the little water basins on either side, but Jake can do it...
There's also a waterslide on the beachfront.  I've never been down this particular one, but I am going this summer with Jake.  I'll just need to find a quiet day.  Oh, a word of warning, you cannot move on this beach, or anywhere near it, on New Year's day...
While spring has officially begun in the southern hemisphere, it's still pretty cool here in the mornings and evenings.  I like to get Danie to light the fire at his house.  It means we sit away from the TV and chat.  TV is officially my worst form of entertainment...
My cousin and his family visited from Johannesburg for just over a week.  He's got twin daughters who are 6 years old.  That's Megan on the left and Hannah in the middle.  Jake got on really well with them, so we spent quite a bit of time together while they were in town...
We were at Eden on the Bay for a late breakfast.  The kids had a ball playing on the grass while we had coffee and chatted...
And here's a family snap, Craig and his wife Yvonne and their girls.  On a beach.  With a mountain...
I also managed to get Jake to put his arms around the girls for a snap.  While he wasn't thrilled, he did do it.  I couldn't get him to smile though, that was asking for too much...
And I got a nice picture taken of Jake and I on the beach too.  I love having pictures taken of the two of us, there aren't too many around since I'm always the one taking the snaps.  Now I must actually get some printed...
There are no words to discribe how much I love this little boy and the way he loves nature.  He is like a sponge and loves learning more about the world we live in...
On our way home, we stopped to have a look at the MV SELI 1 wreck along the Blouberg beach front.  During the previous night, the boat had broken apart, which resulted in an oil spill.  The vessel was supposed to have been emptied of oil already, so this shouldn't have happened.  The boat is a Turkish bulk carrier and it ran aground in 2 years ago.  The owners of the vessel have shown no interest in removing it and the problem of cleaning it out and breaking it up has been left to the South African Maritime.  And now we have this "big" mess to deal with on top of it too!  We were lucky enough to arrive just in time to see them getting this helicopter ready to go and inspect the wreck.  Jake was thrilled to see it taking off...
The beach was completely closed as authorities got on with their work...
Here's the "SELI 1".  The boat is now in 3 pieces...
Here you can see the dark patches of the oil in the sea.  Fortunately not too many animals were injured by the oil.  They'd only picked up one seal when we were there.  It wasn't a huge spill, but still disgusting.  From Blouberg (translation: blue mountain) beach, there are such beautiful views of Table Mountain.  The SELI 1 is a real eye sore to a beautiful landscape...
Something pretty growing in the dunes.  This is a little fygie.  I love them and my parents always used to have them growing in the garden when we were kids.  The sandunes surrounding Blouberg are protected and you may not even walk on them...
A view of the clean up operation...
Other than that, Jake has been taking quite a keen interest in my camera again.  I love that he is so tiny and manages to get around so well with my big camera.  These pictures were taken at Danie's house one evening while we were braai'ing.  The first two are of a Western Leopard Toad, which is a protected species, found only in the Western Cape.  There are quite a few where Danie lives and we have seen them before in the garden, but it's spring now and breeding season is upon us, so they are out in force, looking for a watery nest.  Jake is bound to try catching tadpoles as soon as they hatch!  Of coures he knows to put them back.  It's really lovely to lie in bed at night and listen to the toads calling out to each other.
Please note:  I have done no editing or cropping to these pictures, they are all Jake's own work.  He did pretty well, don't you think?  Especially since he was hanging over a fence stretching to get as close as possible.  And yes, my camera is insured...
And here's Laila.  I think this might be the only picture ever of her with her tongue actually inside her mouth!  Well done Jake!!  Speaking of spring and breeding and all that, Laila's looking for a mate, so please let me know if you know of anyone who has a male boxer keen for some fun with this pretty girl...
And that's all for now.  I promise to try write more often.

Sending lots of love to you all,

Bianca's Christening...

As with Connor a few years back, Jo and Paul recently had little Bianca christened at their home.  Bianca was as good as gold, as usual, and looked like a little doll in her beautiful christening gown.  My paternal grandmother knitted the outfit for me when I was christened and both Joanne and Rosanne wore it as well.  It's becoming a bit of a family heirloom.  Still, I'm sure I didn't look this cute in it!!

As usual, Jo put out a beautiful spread of quiches, salads and these beautiful pink cupcakes and meringues.  The little rice paper hearts had her name and birthdate written on them, too sweet...
She looks so much like Jo.  Connor looks more like his dad, but when you put a pic of Bianca next to one of Connor at the same age, you can barely tell them apart.  Funny how genetics work...
Connor paid no particular attention to the solemness of the ceremony and ran around making a noise and showing us his books.  He's very into Thomas the Tank Engine at the moment.  It's so cute how he knows all the characters' names.  He has assigned names to every member of the family - My mom is Thomas, my dad is Percy, I'm Duck, Jake's Duncan, Bianca's Emily and Connor himself is his favourite character, Gordon.  Paul was very put out that he was to be named after Neville, a character who hardly features in the stories...
Jo and Paul making their promises for Bianca...
 The blessing...
I loved the way the early morning sunshine caught the gown...
Proud parents.  We couldn't pin Connor down for a proper family photo.  Next time???
Bianca was hungry, so mom gave her a bottle, while Jo and Paul got the champagne poured...

The rest of the outfit.  Can you believe someone actually spent hours and hours knitting this...
Grandparents with their grand kids.  Connor was struggling to get away...
Which meant that Jake could enjoy a few extra moments with his newest cousin...
He was very concerned when she had a coughing fit in his arms...
 3 Generations...
Showing off her under things.  Bianca started howling after this and was soon out of her princess dress and in her cot for a nap...
It is always special to be able to share in moments like these and we look forward to watching Bianca grow and learn over the years!  Just, please, please don't grow up as fast as your cousin and big brother!!

Love,
Sue XXX
